Campus Profile:

Every Friday, we have student led Friday night services at 4:30 followed by a Kosher Shabbat dinner at 5:30 in the Hillel House, both open to the Lafayette community. In any given week we will have a minyan for our student led service (conservative/reform/egalitarian) and 40-60+ people for our Shabbat dinner. We also have monthly bagel brunches. All of the meals are free for the Lafayette community. Next year we will also include weekly Havdallah services every Saturday night.

We have special programs, services and dinners for holidays throughout the year, from our Interfaith Seder which averages upwards of 150 people on the first night of Passover to our Rosh Hashanah dinner, Yom Kippur break-fasts to Kiddush in our Sukkah to our Purim carnival/costume contests and many more.

We sponsor a wide variety of guest speakers and performers from Jewish comedians, to Klezmer bands, to Holocaust survivors, to experts on anti-Semitism around the world and the Image of Israel in American-Jewish Literature. In 2005-6 for example, we welcomed the "G-d Squad," the female a capella group "Visions," and the Israeli Consul General of Philadelphia.

We assist in many community service and social action programs on campus from Wellness Day to blood drives, and cooking for the women's shelter in the Easton community.  We have monthly movie nights at the Hillel House showing movies from The Graduate to Keeping the Faith, and social events ranging from cookie and cocoa nights, to ice cream parties.

Every month, we will be trying to go to different synagogues in the Lehigh Valley for Saturday morning services. We are one of the hosting schools in the Lehigh Valley for the Jewish and Israeli Film Series which shows award-winning, new Jewish and Israeli films for the Lehigh Valley community.  Instead of havdalah every week, we do have either a havdalah or a shabbat morning minyan each month, in addition to weekly erev shabbat services.

The most distinctive qualities of our Hillel are its extended family atmosphere, high level of weekly faculty participation, openness to those who are not Jewish (reciprocal organizational relationships formed), close relationship with the local synagogue and temple (10 minute) drive , and our high level of general visibility on campus, including the visibility of those faculty who participate in Hillel.

We are a proactive, rather than a reactive, organization, and Jewish students have a high level of satisfaction at the college.
