Campus Profile:Hillel at Sarah Lawrence College is the hub of Jewish life on campus. With committed students and dedicated staff, Hillel has grown from a small handful of students to a vibrant and growing presence on campus served by two full-time professionals, and a student board (the "Va`ad Squad"). At Hillel, we strive to enhance the lives of Jewish students so that they may enrich the Jewish people and the world. All members of the Sarah Lawrence community are welcome to participate in this holy work. We seek to address all aspects of Jewish life. Hillel offers opportunities to take part in Jewish Education, Israel programs, tzedek (social justice) efforts, and Jewish prayer and festival celebrations. Each semester, we welcome a variety of Jewish bands, speakers and cultural performers. Just as the Sarah Lawrence community is often engaged in difficult or controversial issues, so too does Hillel at SLC take on the areas of Jewish life that students may find challenging. Last semester, Rabbi Mike led a discussion on "The Myth of Biblical Homophobia," and Hillel welcomed the filmmakers of the new documentary Young, Jewish and Left. Hillel has come to be known campus-wide for these events, including our regular Midnight Run event, where we bring food and clothing to the homeless poor of New York City, and our monthly kosher Shabbat dinners. We also inaugurated our "Trick-or-Treat for Hunger" program, visiting our neighbors in Bronxville to collect not candy, but non-perishable items for the local food pantry. (OK, some of us took candy - but not that much...) And, beginning in the fall of 2006, Hillel at Sarah Lawrence was proud to offer regular Shabbat evening services for the first time in its history.
