Campus Profile:Athens, Georgia: the home of the University of Georgia (UGA) and one of the great college towns of America. Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Athens is a hotbed of excitement that far exceeds its small-town size of 111,000 souls. Walking down College Avenue, one passes by Wuxtry Records, where Michael Stipe met Peter Buck and music history was made as R.E.M. was formed. Other musical acts that launched from Athens and made a striking impact on American music include the B-52's, Widespread Panic, Drive-by Truckers, and the Modern Skirts. Downtown Athens hosts such famed rock 'n roll venues as the 40-Watt Club, one of the most important indie-rock clubs on the east coast. Last summer, Lucky Magazine profiled Athens as one of the five best off-the-beaten-path places to shop in America. UGA is a leading research university with a distinguished history. Founded in 1785 (and mentioned in Gone with the Wind) the university has grown to its current population of 34,000 graduate and undergraduate students. An atmosphere of rich intellectual ferment combines with the thrill of national collegiate sports teams to produce a heady mix of challenge. The UGA Bulldogs football team defeated the University of Hawaii Warriors the Sugar Bowl in December; the women's gymnastics Gym Dogs just won their fourth straight national championship, and the men's basketball team made the NCAA tournament in a Cinderella finish to its season. UGA's faculty boasts Prof. Richard Elliott Friedman (Who Wrote the Bible?), a Biblical scholar of world renown, as well as some 20 courses on Jewish subjects. Our professional programs in business and law are very well respected; excitingly, UGA plans to open a new medical school in the 2008 year.
