Proud to be an American There have been a few occasions when I can recall a profound feeling of patriotism: the first time I saw the Rocky Mountains, having a U.S. customs agent at JFK Airport welcome me “home,” and listening to the Indiana University Hillel’s a cappella group harmonize for the president and first lady.
When their performance was over, the president didn't hesitate. He acknowledged and praised the group - each singer. For the students, their faces told the whole story: none could suppress a smile.
As a Jew, a Hillel employee and an American, I was proud of the young men and women singing timeless Chanukah songs in the White House. One does not have to be partisan, or even political, to appreciate the beauty of that moment.
