FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Friday, September 21, 2007 (New York, NY) – In response to the announcement that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been invited to speak at Columbia University on Monday September 24, Jewish students across the political and religious spectrum unite to protest his virulent anti-Semitic, anti-Israel, anti-America and anti-democracy position.

Organizing several key initiatives on the Columbia campus, including an advocacy training day on Sunday September 23, and helping form the campus-wide student coalition that will mass-demonstrate on the college campus where Ahmadinejad will be speaking on Monday, Columbia/Barnard Hillel is responding by providing students with the necessary training and outlets to voice their protest in a constructive, cohesive way.

“The entire Jewish community here is angered and outraged by the repugnant views and actions of Ahmadinejad” said Josh Rosner, student president of Columbia/Barnard Hillel.

He continued: “Ahmadinejad’s views stand contrary not only to fundamental Jewish values and beliefs, but to American ideals of freedom, tolerance and democracy.”
Columbia/Barnard Hillel urges all protesters to “demonstrate in a strong but peaceful manner – a right that Ahmadinejad refuses to grant to his own people.”

Columbia/Barnard Hillel is the umbrella organization for over forty Jewish student groups at Columbia University and Barnard College. Its mission to create and sustain a vibrant Jewish community on campus. Hillel helps students find a balance in being distinctively Jewish and universally human by encouraging them to pursue tzedek (social justice), tikun olam (repairing the world) and Jewish learning, and to actively engage with Israel and the Jewish people worldwide.

Many students at Columbia have relatives who survived or where victims of the Holocaust.  Why not have each student where a xeroxed picture of each of these relatives on a string or ribbon pinned to your shirt or  around your neck.  Invite Ahmadenijad to ask you about these people and tell you how their deaths or experiences were "a myth."

Hillel Uruguay will be present in spirit; supporting every single person and intitiative who denies Iranian President speech. We consider his actions and words extremelly violent an agressive against judaism and strongly support actions against his goals and ideas, which never point to a world of tolerance and plurality.

Can you help show support for Aliza, the Columbia Alumna and noted journalist who ripped her diploma in protest to Ahmadinejad. Please see the fan site: http://GoAliza.com and circulate among your memebers. Thanks Amanda Karabel
