The most Masooma Hydary knew about Judaism came from the images splayed across television screens.

An episode of Sex and the City taught her the ins and outs of conversion. Chanukah celebrations portrayed on TV sitcoms became primers about the holiday.

On Sunday the 21-year-old set foot inside a synagogue for the first time for a hands-on lesson in Judaism. She was among a group of Muslim and Jewish students from Binghamton University learning about two religions that bear more similarities than they thought.
