Exemplars Named at Schusterman Hillel International Professional Staff Conference
January 07, 2002Comments (0) | Add | E-mail this to a friend More than 600 Hillel professionals from around the world came together in December at the 2001 Schusterman Hillel International Professional Staff Conference at the Doral Forrestal Hotel and Conference Center in Princeton, N.J. The event provided an opportunity to learn, to celebrate and to draw strength from being part of a vibrant, growing international movement.
Highlights included: The naming of eight Exemplars of Excellence: Hillel Council of Colorado Executive Director Pat Blumenthal; The Ben and Esther Rosenbloom Hillel Center for Jewish Student Life at the University of Maryland, College Park Executive Director Scott Brown; Clark University Hillel Director David Coyne; Director of Commuter Campus Services for Hillels Around Chicago Multi-Campus Center Ammi Field; Brandeis University Hillel Associate Director Ora Gladstone; Hofstra Hillel Program Director Jewish Michelle Greenwald; Centre for Jewish Campus Life at the University of Toronto Director Michelle Lackie; and Hillel of Greater Baltimore Director David Raphael The release of "Achieving Excellence," a comprehensive set of standards for Hillel Foundations in all areas of operation, from Jewish learning and student programming, to development and fiscal management. Hillel also published "Keep Your Eyes on the Prize," a series of essays outlining the key concepts behind Hillel's Jewish renaissance. The presentation of the 2001 William Haber Award for programs of quality for the Jewish campus community: Hillel at the George Washington University, the Hillel Foundation at the University of Florida and University of Massachusetts, Amherst Hillel. The presentation of the 2001 Elie Wiesel Award for Jewish Arts and Culture to the University of Virginia Hillel. The presentation of the Joseph Meyerhoff Prize for Excellence in Jewish Education to the Edgar M. Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life at New York University for its "Ain Sof" song book. The accreditation of seven Hillel Foundations, including the Cleveland Hillel Foundation; Hillel at the University of Maryland, College Park; Hillel Foundation at the University of Minnesota; Hillel Foundation Milwaukee; Hillel at Syracuse University; New Orleans Hillel Center; and Penn State Hillel Foundation. The creation of Hillel Foundations in Central Florida and Uruguay. The opening of four new Hillel facilities, including, The Albert and Temmy Latner Jewish Students' Center of Kitchener-Waterloo (Ontario, Canada); the Jewish University Center of Pittsburgh; the Milton Roisman Jewish Student Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara; and the North Carolina Hillel Center.
