Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life welcomes a new class of outstanding fellows chosen from the top Jewish activists across the country. Among the five new fellows are a Fulbright Scholar, a White House intern and the first Iyyun Fellow. The fellows will serve at Hillel's International Center in Washington, D.C., for the 2001-2002 academic year.

The fellows assist in coordinating and planning the annual international Hillel conferences, including the Schusterman Hillel International Student Leaders Assembly and the Charlotte and Jack J. Spitzer B'nai B'rith Hillel Forum on Public Policy. Additionally, fellows strive to ensure dynamic Jewish life on campuses worldwide by creating innovative programs and initiatives.

  • Hannah Graham of Richmond, Va., will hold the Iyyun Fellowship, a new position working with Hillel's Joseph Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Learning. Iyyun is a Hebrew phrase which means to study intensely. The Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Virginia was recognized for her contributions as the chairperson of the Jewish Women's Group and received an award for redefining the Jewish campus community. In the spring of 2000, Graham interned at the Reuben and Edith Hecht Museum in Haifa while studying abroad at the University of Haifa.
  • Samuel and Helene Soref Fellow Stacey Gross, of North Palm Beach, Fla., is a recent graduate of the University of Florida. As programming vice-president of University of Florida Hillel, she organized and implemented the largest and most comprehensive Jewish outreach program in the history of the University of Florida and the surrounding community, uniting 1,000 students for the Sabbath.
  • Shira Hutt, of Longmeadow, Mass., the Arline and David L. Bittker Fellow, comes to her position from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where she was the president of the campus's Hillel Foundation. She was the recipient of the Harold Grinspoon Scholarship for the United Jewish Appeal Israel trip.
  • Bronfman Fellow Karlin Kreindler, of Cincinnati, Ohio, is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder. She was awarded a 2000 U.S. Fulbright scholarship in the Philippines where she researched ecotourism in the Palawan province. She received her degree in international affairs with a minor in Japanese.
  • University of Michigan graduate Rachel Weiss, of Farmington Hills, Mich., was selected as the Tzedek Fellow. As a 1999 White House intern she served on the White House Millennium Council where she designed and implemented Millennium Green, an environmental protection and beautification initiative. Among her positions as a Hillel activist, Rachel served as vice-chair of the Hillel Governing Board at the University of Michigan.
