Concordia Criticized for Barring Barak Speech

Most days, the campus of Concordia University, snuggled among the highrises and grey-stone buildings of downtown Montreal, seems a noble example of Canadian multiculturalism.

Muslim women in head scarves study in the main study hall. So do Jewish men, their faith obvious by the yarmulkes on their heads. It's a diverse student body; Indian, Asian, Mideastern and Caucasian faces abound, most days stuck in their text books.

That's a fair image, the one Concordia wants the world to see. Yet, it sent out quite a different message this week, when the administration blocked a campus speech by former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak, saying there was the possibility of violence erupting.
