Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life was honored last week for its work recruiting potential bone-marrow donors on college campuses with the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation's Solomon Weill Recruitment Award. Weinberg Tzedek Hillel Director Michelle Lackie accepted the award at the Gift of Life's fifth annual Partners for Life Donor-Recipient Gala in New York.

"Hillel students have taken ownership of a community service project that truly repairs the world. We are truly blessed to work with such a wonderful organization and look forward to many rewarding years of partnership," said Jay Feinberg, executive director of Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation.

Hillel first joined forces with Gift of Life, the only bone-marrow registry in North America focusing on recruiting Jewish donors, last spring to encourage college students to participate in bone-marrow drives, both as donors and as organizers. Hillels on almost 50 campuses have sponsored drives during the 2004-05 academic year, adding more than 5,000 potential donors to the registry.

"We want every college student to understand that he or she has the power to save a life by participating in a bone marrow registry," Hillel International President Avraham Infeld said. "Hillel is pleased to be playing a role on campus in promoting bone marrow registration."

More than two dozen students have already been identified as potential matches, and in February, George Washington University student Amy Fishman became the first student to donate bone marrow after registering at a Hillel-sponsored drive.

Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, which frequently co-sponsors campus bone-marrow drives with Hillel, was also recognized for its outstanding dedication to Gift of Life's mission with the Solomon Weill Recruitment Award. Other Jewish organizations, such as KEDMA and birthright israel operators, have also become Gift of Life partners.
