Hillel of San Diego will get its student center in La Jolla, but it will have to provide more parking than it imagined.
The City Council decided last night to sell Hillel a little less than an acre at the busy crossroads of La Jolla Village Drive and Torrey Pines Road, over the complaints of a contingent of La Jollans who described the proposed project as a "square peg in a round hole."
Hillel, a religious organization for Jewish students, wants to build a 12,000-square-foot center where UCSD students can hold meetings during the week and attend services Friday evenings and on major holy days.
