For the past year and a half, Texas Hillel, an organization dedicated to fostering the Jewish community on campus, has called the top floor of the University Baptist Church home while awaiting the completion of its new building.
"We had a great relationship with the University Baptist Church," said Julia Unger, who is working on a fellowship. "But students didn't [feel] as comfortable there."
The Jewish students wanted a place they could call their own, she added, and the cramped space in the Baptist church didn't provide such an atmosphere.
Hillel temporarily moved into the church until the new building was finished. The group moved into the new Texas Hillel Center Tuesday.
