What’s the state of Jewish college students at the dawn of 2010?
Students are defining themselves through action. They’re doing Jewish things -- great Jewish things. You can read more about these inspiring stories below by here. For now, here’s a round-up:
Hillel Helps Haiti
Jewish students have joined the relief effort for Haiti. Here’s one example: At Tulane University in New Orleans, members of the Challah for Hunger organization have redirected their focus to Haiti. Jewish students at New York University have also taken charge, organizing an on-campus vigil to mark the two weeks since the earthquake.
Hillel Launches Student Coalition Against Nuclear Iran
Hillel, in cooperation with the Israel on Campus Coalition (ICC), has launched the Student Coalition Against Nuclear Iran (SCANI), a student-run network that will oppose Iran’s efforts to acquire nuclear weapons and raise the profile of the Iranian threat on their campuses.
Stanford Hillel Stands Up to Hatred
Hundreds of students of all backgrounds drowned out Westboro Baptist Church’s message of hatred last week when the anti-Jewish, anti-Gay group protested in front of the Taube Hillel House at Stanford University and the nearby Gunn High School which suffered the loss of five students to suicide this year.
Cancun? No, Gracias. Tikkun Olam
One recent development among Jewish students has been the flood Jewish alternative breaks and service projects. More than 300 students participated in Hillel alternative breaks this winter; 50 volunteered in Los Angeles with Hillel and City Year in a break-through program.
Ten Years of Taglit-Birthright Israel and Hillel Partnership
This past winter break marked the 10th anniversary of Taglit-Birthright Israel, a free, first-time trip to Israel, and Hillel’s been there from the start. Add this winter’s 2,000 students on Hillel trips and Hillel’s total comes to almost 35,000 participants.
Recognizing Outstanding Hillels
During a global online Web conference, Hillel announced the winners this week of its annual Vision and Values Awards. The five awards were given to Penn State Hillel, the Hillel Foundation at Orange County, The Hillel Society at Lehigh University, the University of Pennsylvania Hillel and Minsk Hillel.
