With the growth of anti-Israel sentiment on university campuses in recent years, the importance of having a place where students can explore their Jewishness in a pluralistic environment cannot be overstated, says Agi Mandel.
Now entering her second year as president of the board of Hillel of Greater Toronto, Mandel became involved in the organization in the late 1990s. In March, she was one of three Hillel lay leaders to receive the international organization's Exemplar of Excellence award.
In addition to taking on fundraising-related leadership roles for the Wolfond Centre for Jewish Campus Life – Canada's first purpose-built Hillel building – and developing the board by recruiting new members and increasing its involvement, Mandel has been an accessible, visible president, said Zac Kaye, executive director of Hillel of Greater Toronto.
