The older woman was aware of the nation's legacy of prejudice--the jobs denied by anti-Semitic bosses, the Jewish designation on passports, the thugs who spray-painted graffiti on synagogues and assaulted Jews on the streets. She advised her granddaughter not to take part in Hillel, an international foundation promoting Jewish life on campus.
