Hillel Students Rally for Peace
October 16, 2000Comments (0) | Add | E-mail this to a friend As hundreds of Hillel students demonstrated their support for Israel across the country, Hillel students from University of Maryland, American University, George Mason and George Washington University stood in front of the White House on October 13 calling for peace in the region. An estimated 2,000 participants gathered in Lafayette Park to voice their solidarity with the people and government of Israel amid persistent violence in the Middle East.
Speakers at the noontime rally – including Sens. Arlen Spector (R-PA) and Gordon Smith (R-OR) – called on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to call an end to the violence and to return to the bargaining table. A small Moslem counter-demonstration could occasionally be heard in the background.
