Hillel is proud to acknowledge the following recent college graduates who have joined the staff of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman International Center as fellows or associates. These young people are applying the lessons they learned as Hillel leaders on their individual campuses to benefit the Hillel movement around the world.

Laura Herman, Organizational Learning Fellow
Organizational Learning

Laura is originally from Toronto, Ontario, and a 2008 graduate of the University of Toronto with a major in Political Science and minors in History and Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations.  During Laura’s time in university, she served two years in the prestigious Grinspoon Internship as well as the Israel Affairs Co-Chair for the Hillels of Toronto. She also participated in the Leading Up North mission trip and did a summer study abroad experience in Jordan focused on archaeology. As the Organizational Learning Fellow, Laura will be involved in the team’s key projects, working to collect and compile for use data essential to Hillel’s effective and strategic performance.
 
Adam Broms, Human Resources Fellow
Human Resources

Adam is originally from Plymouth, Minnesota, and a 2008 graduate of The George Washington University with a major in Human Resources. During Adam’s time in at GW, he served as the president of the GW Hillel, worked as a classroom teacher at Temple Rodef Shalom and studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has also served as a staff member at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin, where he has spent the three summers as a Counselor and Senior Programmer for kids with special needs. As the Human Resources Fellow, Adam will be integral in assisting in the planning of the Professional Staff Conference and developing and implementing strategies to recruit recent graduates and young professionals to work for Hillel, along with other key HR projects.

Max Orenstein, Communications Associate
Communications Department

Max, a native of Allentown, Penn., is a May graduate of NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Active in Hillel, he was vice president of KOACH and on the board of Gesher, the pro-Israel club on campus. While an undergraduate he taught in local religious schools and interned extensively with publications in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including AOL News/Sports, Newsday, The Allentown Morning Call, The Jersey Journal, and The Tribeca Trib.

Max’s true claim to Hillel fame is his role as a photographer. Max photographed Katrina refugees and Hillel students at the Houston Astrodome in 2005; participants in Hillel’s New York CLIP program; and, most recently, he was the principal photographer of Hillel’s 2007 Annual Report.

As communications associate, Max will be responsible for editing the Shavua Tov e-newsletter, Hillel’s high school outreach program and general public relations assignments.

Jamie Silverstein, Bronfman Fellow
International Division, Office of the President

Jamie is originally from Boca Raton, Florida, and is a 2008 graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Recreation and Event Management and a minor in General Business Administration. Jamie was an active student leader at Florida; some highlights include serving as the president of the UF Alpha Epsilon Phi chapter, as well as two successful internships at the UF Hillel and the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County. As the Bronfman Fellow, Jamie will work closely with the president of Hillel on a variety of special projects, as well as devote considerable energy to developing and nurturing close relationships with Jewish student leaders across the globe. She will also manage several international programs aimed at fostering connections among Jewish students worldwide.

Rachel Tranen, Associate
Development Department

Rachel graduated with a degree in Jewish studies from the University of Maryland and spent a semester abroad at Tel Aviv University. She is a member of the Primannum Honor Society and the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. During her college years she served as a JESNA Lainer Intern and worked extensively with Jewish teens as a United Synagogue Youth Advisor and counselor for PANIM: The Institute for Jewish Learning and Values. Her Hillel leadership included founding Challah Back, a student-led fundraising campaign, as well as membership in Terrapin Israel Public Affairs Committee, the Jewish Student Union and the Maryland Jewish Xperience. She grew up in Columbia, Md.

Jonathan Weiner, Arline and David L. Bittker Fellow
Center for Innovation and Implementation

Jon is originally from Beachwood, Ohio, and a 2008 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with majors in Biology and Jewish Studies. While at Penn, Jon was an involved student leader, some highlights include organizing and leading a Jewish-Muslim service trip to New Orleans and serving as the executive chair of PRISM, an interfaith coalition joining Penn’s religious communities. This coming year Jon will be an integral member of the Center for Innovation and Implementation – working on a variety of projects to broaden Hillel’s reach and develop new student leadership.  He will also continue the success of Hillel’s Outstanding Student Initiatives Grants in funding the new and extraordinary innovations students and professionals develop on campus, to help reach more students and connect them to Jewish life.
