At Hillel Institute 2012 in St. Louis, Hillel was proud to present Richard M. Joel Exemplar of Excellence Awards to seven campus professionals, and Vision & Value Awards to six outstanding local Hillels. In addition, we extend a hearty Mazel Tov to the two winners of Hillel Milestone Awards. They have made great contributions during their tenures with Hillel.

The Richard M. Joel Exemplar of Excellence Award goes each year to professionals in various stages of their careers who have offered especially innovative approaches to enhancing campus life for Jewish undergraduate and graduate students.

The 2012 Richard M. Joel Exemplar of Excellence Award Winners:

• Sarah Cohen Portilla, Associate Director for New Initiatives at Rutgers University Hillel
• Lenny Goldstein, Acting Executive Director/Associate Director at Tufts University Hillel
• Ayala Peer, Israel Fellow, University of Texas Hillel
• Matt Vogel, Executive Director, Baruch College Hillel
• Dr. Amy Sandler, Director of Jewish Campus Life at the University of Illinois-Chicago’s Levine Hillel
• Rabbi Debbie Pine, Executive Director at Johns Hopkins University Hillel
• Lena Krulevich, Director at Hillel in Moscow, Russia

Milestone Award Winners:

• Marla Baker, a 30-year veteran staffer of the Hillel movement in Chicago. Baker has spent the past 18 years as Executive Director of Levine Hillel Center at University of Illinois at Chicago. This year, Marla will be taking on yet another challenge as Executive Director of the new urban Chicago Hillel Foundation serving UIC and campuses previously served by Hillels around Chicago such as DePaul University and Columbia College.
• Patti Ray, a 35-year veteran staffer of the Hillel movement in Chicago. Patti's involvement with the Hillel movement spans nearly four decades, starting when she was in graduate school at the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign. Patti is currently the Hillel Director at Loyola University Chicago.
