Posted by: Wayne L. Firestone, President on 4/15/2008 11:29:00 AM

From the April 18, 2008 edition of The New York Jewish Week.

As the holiday of Passover approaches, it is a good time to reflect on the name of our organization and the central role that Hillel plays in the observance of the Passover seder. For millennia, Jews around the world have partaken of the “Hillel sa... Read More >>

Hillel's Mission: Jewish Students
Posted by: Jeff Rubin, Associate Vice President for Communications on 4/8/2008 4:40:00 PM

The recent JTA article on non-Jews participating in Hillel activities has stimulated a remarkable amount of interest and discussion, online and in the real world, among Hillel professionals, stakeholders and community members. The article created the misconception that, somehow, Hillel had shifted its focus from Jewish college students to the campus in general. This is just not the case. Hillel... Read More >>

Our Violent Campuses?
Posted by: Jeff Rubin, Associate Vice President for Communications on 2/19/2008 4:40:00 PM

To judge by mainstream media coverage of higher education, universities are overpriced and overly violent.

Less than a year after the Virginia Tech massacre and within one week of each other, two murder-suicides at Louisiana Technical College and Northern Illinois University claimed a total of nine lives.

As published in The Jerusalem Post, January 13, 2008.

As Taglit-Birthright Israel participants met in Tel Aviv's Independence Hall this week, a group of soldiers waited for the students outside. The soldiers had spent five days with the students as part of the Taglit program. They just wanted to say goodbye before their new friends departed for their respect... Read More >>

Ignorance is not bliss

I've never seen a swastika.

I know what they look like from television shows (most recently on "Grey's Anatomy"), WWII documentaries and my visits to Holocaust memorial museums. But aside from that, I've never actually seen a swastika drawn out of malice on a public building or a private home or even on a piece of paper.

Though I grew up in a home that wasn't Jewish, there was nev... Read More >>

Posted by: Wayne L. Firestone, President on 11/20/2007 12:37:00 PM

The 2007 United Jewish Communities General Assembly in Nashville will be remembered as a watershed in Hillel’s relationship with the Federation movement. Never before have Jewish students, or Hillel, played such a significant role at this most prestigious of Jewish communal gatherings.

As the media have reported, the GA opened with Hillel students marching into the plenary to the sound o... Read More >>
