UF Hillel helps provide Jewish Library in Varazdin Croatia

One of the projects that UF Hillel has been working on is a partnership with the city of Varazdin in Croatia. This city has a long history of a vibrant Jewish community which no longer exists. The town has been doing a great deal of research and has put together an exhibit about the Jews of Varazdin. We are hoping to have the exhibit at UF Hillel next year along with the Mayor of Varazdin. This is all being funded by the City of Varazdin.

As part of this project, UF Hillel has collaborated with Compass in Philanthropy to help with a special Jewish library in Varazdin. Compass in Philanthropy has identified the donors and together we are making this happen. The sign will be placed by the library, forever linking UF Hillel and the City of Varazdin - the Jewish students at UF and the wonderful Jewish community of Verazdin that no longer exists due to the Holocaust.

We hope that in the next 2-3 years an exchange program will be created (funded by donors through Compass in Philanthropy or the City of Verazdin) that will enable our students to see the rich history themselves and understand what the Jewish world looked like prior to the Holocaust.

The following link gives you a very brief summary of Jewish history in Varazdin. http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/judaica/ejud_0002_0020_0_20322.html
