Spanier, Hillel celebrate Shabbat

Sporting a yarmulke with a Nittany Lion logo, Penn State President Graham Spanier welcomed in the first Shabbat of the fall semester with members of Penn State Hillel on Friday night at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center.

The night's events consisted of two separate services -- a Conservative service for more observant students and a less formal Reform service -- followed by dinner. Students were encouraged to participate in the service, the dinner or both, based on their preferences.

"It's really important to me that we connect with Jewish life more than just the religion," said Hillel President Michal Berns (junior-media law), who was raised in Israel.
