Pro-Israel students at the University of California, Berkeley and UC San Diego defeated anti-Israel divestment measures in their student governments.
At Berkeley, students successfully upheld a veto of the divestment vote by Will Smelko, the president of the Associated Students of the University of California, Berkeley (ASUC).
Berkeley Hillel Executive Director Adam Naftalin-Kelman, student activists and Hillel professionals led a coalition to defeat the divestment measure with the cooperation and support of community partners.
In San Diego, the Associated Students of University of California, San Diego, council voted to send a similar measure to committee rather than approving it. The pro-Israel group, Tritons for Israel, organized a campus campaign against the measure and spoke with individual student council members to express their opposition to the divestment measure.
"These measures are wrong for campuses and wrong for the Middle East," says Hillel President Wayne L. Firestone. "Hillel will continue to work with students across the nation to educate them about Israel, to foster harmony on campus, to work for peace in the Middle East and to ensure that the true face of Israel is shown on campus."
