As Hurricane Irene bore down on the East Coast, Stony Brook Hillel installed a new Torah scroll thanks to the generosity of Ira A. Lipman and his family. "This is a monumental gift to our students," said Rabbi Joseph Topek, director of Stony Brook Hillel. "The Torah is the central document of Judaism and is in many ways the foundation of our culture and of monotheistic religion. It stands as the anchor of our values and our beliefs." This new Torah will join other Torahs that Hillel already uses for worship services and will be dedicated for use by the traditional Jewish student community.
The Torah has was presented in memory of Mr. Lipman's mother, Belle A. Lipman. The ceremony began with a procession from outside the building where the new Torah was escorted under a wedding canopy to its new home in the chapel. There, a scribe completed the writing of the final letters of the scroll. Speakers included Rabbi Sol Roth, Rabbi Emeritus of the Fifth Avenue Synagogue in New York, and Rabbi Rafael Grossman, Rabbi Emeritus of the Baron Hirsch Congregation in Memphis, TN.
