The Bess Myerson Campus Journalism Awards

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is pleased to sponsor The Bess Myerson Campus Journalism Awards for the 2000-2001 academic year. Established through a generous donation from Bess Myerson, the Awards help to advance interfaith and multicultural understanding through excellence in human relations reporting and commentary in campus newspapers.
Soon after becoming the first Jewish woman to be awarded the title of Miss America in 1945, Ms. Myerson participated in ADL's program "You Can't Be Beautiful and Hate," touring high schools and college campuses throughout the country, encouraging the values of goodwill and understanding among peoples of all religious, ethnic and racial backgrounds.
Her concern over today's rising racial and religious tensions on college and university campuses led her to endow these Awards for campus journalists whose coverage addresses these issues. RULES AND PROCEDURESAWARD OBJECTIVE
The Bess Myerson Campus Journalism Award encourages campus journalists to think critically about issues of racial, ethnic and religious tolerance; cultural and lifestyle differences; communication between peoples of diverse backgrounds; and, to express their ideas on these topics in a sensitive and insightful manner. To be eligible for the Award, entries should address issues such as: anti-Semitism, racism, or bigotry; community responses to hate crimes; or, intergroup relations between ethnic, racial, religious, etc. groups. Articles may deal with issues of campus, local, national and international concerns.
AWARD ELIGIBILITY
The competition is open to all recognized campus newspapers at colleges and universities throughout the United States. Articles submitted must have been written by enrolled undergraduate or graduate students.
CATEGORIES
There are two separate Award categories:
1. News reporting and features.
2. Editorials and opinion (including editorial cartoons).
First, second and third place Awards will be given in each category.
CRITERIA FOR ENTRIES
* All entries must be submitted by the college or university newspaper.
* The entry must address one of the topics listed in the Award Eligibility
Section.
* Articles must be written by students enrolled in the college or university
applying for the award.
* Entries may include editorials, editorial cartoons, features, news articles and opinion pieces.
* Individual articles and editorials, as well as series of articles and/or editorials
on a particular subject, will be considered. If a series of writings is submitted,
the series will be evaluated in its entirety as a single entry.
* All entries must have been published during the 2000-2001 academic year (Fall 2000 through Spring 2001 semesters).
* Articles must be submitted in the form of clippings, identifying the date and
name of the publication in which they appeared.
* Each publication may submit no more than one entry (either a series or an
individual piece) in the reporting/feature story category and one entry (either
a series or an individual piece) in the editorial/commentary category.
* Each entry must include an entry form.
JUDGING
Final selection will be made by a distinguished panel of ADL national leaders.
AWARD
First, second and third place winners in each category will be announced in June 2001. Winning entries will be reprinted in an Awards presentation booklet. Each winner will receive a cash award -- $2,500 for first-place finishers; $2,000 for the second-place winner; and, $1,500 for third-place awardees. Awards will be shared equally between the newspaper and the author(s) of the article(s). The author(s) and the newspaper will also receive an Award certificate honoring their commitment to addressing multicultural, interfaith, human relations and interracial issues in a sensitive and enlightened manner.
