One People: Different Worlds
April 09, 2002Comments (0) | Add | E-mail this to a friend The human face of the Middle East conflict becomes vividly clear to college students through One People: Different Worlds, a Hillel program that brings three young Israelis to the United States for conversations on campus.
Through a generous donation from the Low family of Westchester, NY, Iyar Semel, 22 of Ramat Gan, Sharon Hadelman, 21, of Tel Aviv, and Nathalie Narcyz, 21, of Ramat Gan share their opinions about the current situation in Israel, serving in the military, how they feel as Israelis and what they see as the differences between Americans and Israelis.
"We don't represent anyone, we only represent ourselves," explained Iyar Semel. Semel, who is now in the reserves, served for the IDF in the Palestinian Authority, working in joint patrols with Palestinian police as a member of the Joint Security Council. "We are young, down to earth, and convey a different point of view – not an official response."
In addition to their campus based programs, the three Israelis spoke at an Israel Solidarity Rally in New York City that attracted over 10,000 people, met with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), and were featured on New York Channel 2.
"Students are getting a perspective of Israelis that is different from what the media is saying," said Naomi Shapiro, Hillel's Campus Israel Affairs Fellow. "They are very eager to ask questions and find out the Israelis' opinions. Young Americans learn what its like to grow up in Israel, serve in the army, and witness the current conflict."
One People: Different Worlds will take place at: University of Pennsylvania; Temple University; Drexel University; Georgetown University; American University; Johns Hopkins University; George Washington University; University of Virginia; Columbia University; Brooklyn College; Hunter College; Queens College and New York University.
