(WASHINGTON D.C. - May 6) Hillel today named veteran Jewish educator Avraham Infeld as interim president to guide the world's largest Jewish campus group for one year while it searches for a permanent president and international director. Former President Richard M. Joel left Hillel on April 30 to assume the presidency of Yeshiva University.
Infeld, who has been based in Israel, has served as Hillel's Counsel for Jewish Affairs for the last two years, visiting dozens of campuses around the world to address students, professionals and lay leaders. He is the founder of the Melitz Center for Jewish Zionist Education, a unique organization that has helped young Israelis explore their Jewishness. One of the early architects of the birthright israel program, he previously served as chairman of the board of Israel Experience, Ltd., as president and immediate past chairman of the Israel Forum and as chairman of Areivim.
"Avraham is an inspirational communicator who is able to effectively convey a compelling sense of Jewishness to students, regardless of their background," explains Hillel Board of Directors Chairman Neil Moss. "We believe that he will help lead Hillel's exceptional senior staff in executing our mission to serve Jewish students."
"I was honored to be approached to spend the next year leading the team that worked with Richard Joel to bring about the amazing renaissance in Jewish campus life," Infeld says. "Having visited over 50 campuses on three continents in the last year, I am awed by what has been done, challenged by what remains to be done, and committed to ensuring that the Hillel I hand over to the new president continues to be flourishingly healthy."
Hillel's Presidential Search Committee -- comprising representatives of students, professionals and lay leaders -- continues to review candidates for the presidency. To date, the committee has received more that 100 resumes for the position.
"We have been pleased to review the credentials of many talented Jewish leaders from the worlds of business, education and community service," explains Search Committee Chairman Charles Newman. "Hillel is a growing organization that has captured the admiration and respect of the Jewish community. The presidency requires a unique individual who is an educator, administrator and fundraiser. We are confident that we will be able to find the right person with the vision and the skill to advance Hillel's Jewish renaissance."
