Kent State Board Approves Long-Term Lease for Hillel Educational Project
June 17, 2003Comments (0) | Add | E-mail this to a friendKent State University's Board of Trustees approved a property exchange and long-term Kent Campus lease so that Hillel Jewish Student Center can construct a new educational and cultural facility.
Hillel at Kent State, which has been associated with the university since 1967, serves students of many religious and cultural backgrounds. The relationship has helped both the university and the organization foster mutual understanding and cross-cultural dialog, to help prepare students for a diverse global workplace.
Under the agreement approved by trustees today, Hillel would give the university its property on Lincoln Street, adjacent to the Kent Campus, which would enable the university to expand parking in that sector of campus. In return, Hillel would be granted a lease of up to 40 years, with renewal option, to property near the corner of South Lincoln and Summit streets.
Hillel plans to construct a facility similar to those recently built on the campuses of Michigan State and Indiana universities. No university or public money will be involved in the Hillel facility, but the agreement conforms to the university's mission of serving all students and student organizations.
Hillel, which serves students and the communities of Cleveland, Akron, Canton and Youngstown and national Kent State alumni, has been at its current location since 1977. The organization is conducting a fund-raising effort to cover the cost of construction.
