CHAMPAIGN – Israel may conjure images of suicide bombers and security checkpoints.
But Jewish students on campus are getting to know about aspects of the country they don't see on TV through an Israeli woman spending a year at the Hillel Foundation at the University of Illinois.
Reut Ekshtein, 30, came to Hillel in September as its Israel fellow. Hillel provides religious, cultural and social activities for Jewish students. Ekshtein does outreach with students, works with them on Israel programs and does Israel advocacy.
"It's not propaganda," Ekshtein said of her advocacy mission. "It's a way to talk to people about the political situation and maybe enlightening them, showing them what they might not see on TV.
