Hillel students celebrate at Over 300 students joined together for "A Night in Bukhara," sponsored by the Queens College Hillel's Bukharian Club. This cultural heritage program included Bukharian comedy, food, music and dancing. Students came from all over the metropolitan New York area to join in the festivities.

The evening included a traditional Bukharian dance performance by "Chaverim," the JCCA's Bukharian Dance Troupe and a Bukharian musical presentation by Mikhail Abramov, a birthright israel alum. Bukharian comedian Nissan Yakubov entertained the crowd with his impersonations and ethnic humor.

The catered Bukharian meal consisted of Samseh (a beef and onion patty), Corochan (a chicken and potato dish with Central Asian spices), Bacsh (rice and meat with a spicy flavor), Liposhka (a traditional bread baked in a Tandoor brick oven), and Nontochei (a flat bread).

JCSC fellow Richard Layliev spun a mix of international music and traditional Bukharian melodies. He said "I am happy to help bring these joyous programs to our immigrant community and I am happy to see so many new faces here tonight."

"I am amazed by the number of students here this evening and their enthusiasm. This shows me that the Bukharian community in 'Queensbekistan' is alive and well," said Rabbi Shlomo Nisanov of Congregation Kehilat Sepharadim of Kew Gardens Hills in the opening speech.

Rabbi Moshe Shur thanked his staff, Levy/Taub JCSC fellow Richard Layliev and Minikes Director of Student Programs Keren Leiby, for their hard work and effort towards the evening's success.

The program was made possible by an engagement grant from the Kolker-Saxon-Hallock Family Foundation as well as the Queens College Student Association, the Student Union Program Committee, Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, the Queens Region of Hadassah, NYPIRG, the Newman Center, CJO, the Film Club and the Chinese Student Association.
