USC Graduate Student Abbi Gail Levine Wins Hillel/Jerusalem Report Essay Contest

Abbi Gail Levine.(Washington, DC - May 5, 2004) Abbi Gail Levine, a graduate student in professional writing from the University of Southern California, is the winner of the Hillel/Jerusalem Report Essay contest for her essay entitled "Cherry Blossoms and Rain." Levine will receive a free trip to Israel and her essay will be published in an upcoming issue of the Jerusalem Report.

More than 20 students from across the United States entered the contest which was co-sponsored by The Initiative for Israel on Illinois Campuses: a Partnership of the JUF JCRC and Hillels of Illinois. Essay topics ranged from what it means to be a Jewish student today, to reflections of recent Israel trips. Levine's essay dealt with Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, commemorations on campuses in the United States and Israel.

"The contest allowed Hillel and the Jerusalem Report to work together and really reach out to students," said Wayne Firestone, director of Hillel's Center for Israel Affairs. "The essays really showcased the incredible commitment to Judaism and Jewish life on campus that so many students have."
