Michigan Students Celebrate birthright israel Anniversary with Concert
November 02, 2004Comments (0) | Add | E-mail this to a friend  More than 150 students sang and danced with Israeli pop superstar Einat Sarouf last week at a free concert in honor of birthright israel's five-year anniversary at University of Michigan Hillel.
The concert brought together alumni who traveled to Israel with a birthright israel group. Sarouf is one of the regular performers at similar mega events in Jerusalem when the students are there.
Adam Soclof, a University of Michigan sophomore who attended the concert, said, "The atmosphere was lively and filled with the sounds of a beautiful language being sung to the tune of hope and happiness."
"The event was an amazing way to celebrate an experience that is so close to my heart with so many fellow alumni of this trip. I continue to feel grateful that I had the opportunity," said sophomore Laura Markofsky, who helped plan the concert.
birthright israel was launched five years ago as a five-year project and funded by philanthropists, the government of Israel and North American Jewish federations, to offer free, 10-day, no-strings-attached trips to Israel to young Jews between the ages of 18-26 in order to acquaint them with their heritage.
Due to its popularity and success, birthright israel has just been renewed for another five years. To date, more than 70,000 young Jewish from around the world have participated; there were 11,000 this summer alone.
