Hillel Rocks Cleveland at the UJC General Assembly
November 09, 2004Comments (0) | Add | E-mail this to a friendMore than 300 students will gather in Cleveland this weekend for the Hillel-sponsored Student Shabbaton prior to the beginning of next week's United Jewish Communities General Assembly (UJC GA). Hillel President Avraham Infeld and Board of Directors Chair Randall Kaplan will lead a Hillel delegation of students, professionals and lay leaders who will meet with Jewish community leaders from all over the world.
"The GA is one of the best venues for giving community leadership an opportunity to learn about campus and to encourage students to think about future community involvement," Infeld said.
The Shabbaton and the student program at the GA will allow students to participate in a creative intergenerational dialogue that will explore topics such as intermarriage, campus Israel advocacy, global Jewish responsibility, anti-Semitism, and life after graduation. Five Hillel directors will be leading Shabbat services, and Cleveland Hillel will host a party on Saturday evening at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
Hillel's international scope will be on display, as professionals and lay leaders from across the globe will address delegates throughout the assembly. Infeld will speak at a forum about North American connections to Israel, and Kaplan is chairing a session entitled "Jewish Play Makes Kids Stay," which also features a Hillel student leader from Tulane. The Israel on Campus Coalition has organized a panel on Israel advocacy on campus. Marcelo Cynovich, the president of Uruguay Hillel, will speak about community transformation, and executive directors Anya Purinson from Hillel Russia and Gabriel Trajtenberg from Hillel Argentina will also be in attendance. Hillel will host a reception on Monday evening where students and fellows will share their stories with GA delegates.
The large number of participating students was made possible through the generous support of Jewish community leaders who contributed to the 2004 GA Youth Fund, including Kathy E. Manning and Randall R. Kaplan; Arlene Kaufman and Sandy Baklor; Robert and Arlene Kogod; the Robert and Myra Kraft Family Foundation; Joseph and Harvey Meyerhoff Family Charitable Funds; Ben and Esther Rosenbloom Foundation; the Wexner Foundation; and Diane and Howard Wohl. Hillel also thanks the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America for sponsoring parts of the Shabbaton.
