Hillels in Florida and New York will sponsor bone marrow drives in the sukkah on three college campuses during Sukkot. The drives will be held at Purchase College in Purchase, N.Y., and at the two campuses of Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter and Boca Raton, Fla.

The drives are part of the Hillel - Gift of Life Marrow Donor Campaign: If Not Now, When?, a partnership between Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life and the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Registry to recruit college students to participate as potential donors and raise awareness on campuses about the life-saving potential of bone marrow transplants.

At Florida Atlantic University, the bone marrow drive is one of several sukkah events planned throughout the week to focus attention on educational and environmental issues, according to Gary Wolff, the Smokler program associate at Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach.

"What better way to try to help the community than to donate bone marrow, which can be a life-changing event?" Wolff said.

"If this gives the students an opportunity to save a life, it's a great thing," agrees Adam Oded, a program professional at Hillels of Westchester, which serves Purchase College.

The Purchase College sukkah will be in the middle of a courtyard near the dorms, which Oded hopes will attract many students to stop and get tested.

"Student involvement and leadership in Hillel is really growing here, and we hope to catch more students to participate," he said.

Many Hillels across the country have held bone marrow drives already or are planning one for later this year. Other campuses holding drives in October include Rutgers University, University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Arizona, Syracuse University, University of Ohio and Brooklyn College.
