Ohio State University Hillel's theater troupe, the Hillel Players, gathered recently to put together their very own theater production. But there was a catch — they only had 24 hours to do everything, from writing the script to rehearsing each scene, to designing and creating the set. So from 7 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 29 until 7 p.m. the following day, the very first "24-Hour Theater Jam" was born. The event was a brand-new idea that turned out to be a night (and day) bursting with originality and laughter.

"It was 24 hours of pure fun and mayhem – plenty of food, lots of work and a ridiculous amount of fun. We hope that those who participated had a good time and enjoyed a great theater activity," said Ian Young, a first-year member of the Players.

During the next 24 hours, the participants crafted an entirely unique production called "The Party." They wrote, rehearsed, costumed, designed and performed a never-before-seen dramatic/comical work. Students had the opportunity to take on their theatrical dream role, whether it was as an actor, playwright, stage manager, set designer or costume director.

"The Theater Jam was a great way for friends to put their creativity to work," Young said.

If a student had the misfortune of coming down with writer's block, there was no reason to fear – all participants had full access to Hillel's facilities. There was plenty of time to take a break from production to do homework, work out in the fitness center, play video games, hang out, take a nap and, of course, eat.

"The Hillel Players hoped that this event would be just as much a learning process as it was fun," said Valerie Kolko, program director at OSU Hillel and the Players' advisor. "It gave students the opportunity to spend time together in a safe environment on a Saturday night, not to mention getting the name of Hillel Players out there for all to recognize."

The Players also hoped to scope out new talent for their spring show, "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown."
