Hillel Challenges Students to End Hunger
January 04, 2005Comments (0) | Add | E-mail this to a friendHillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life and Hillels of Georgia are encouraging students to join the fight against hunger by providing $1,000 each to the two Hillels that collect the most signatures for WorldManna.org between Jan. 15 and March 4, 2005.
World Manna.org has begun a campaign to encourage large food companies to donate 1 percent of the proceeds from the sale of their products to global hunger. The organization is gathering 10,000 signatures to gain attention for the campaign. The online petition is available at WorldManna.org, along with additional information about the campaign.
"We hope that the friendly competition can engage more students in Tzedek activities, while at the same time raise awareness of the staggering amount of people suffering from hunger both here in the United States and around the world," said Jacob Schreiber, the executive director of Hillels of Georgia. Hillels of Georgia's Tritt Social Justice Force Program and Weinberg Tzedek Hillel are co-sponsors.
WorldManna.org is a multi-faith partnership of consumers and businesses joining together to alleviate and prevent world hunger in the 21st century. Its mission is to create a grassroots movement that will encourage food companies to donate 1 percent of their proceeds to alleviate world hunger by placing a certification symbol on the boxes of food manufactured by participating companies.
Additional Hillels can become co-sponsors by adding to the prize money. Contact Schreiber at Jacob@hillelsofgeorgia.org for more information.
For Hillels to receive credit for the signatures they accumulated, supporters should enter their names and e-mail addresses on the online petition. After submitting their pledge, they will be given the option to enter their address on the subsequent "thank you" page. By including the name of their university in the address line, their signatures will count toward their Hillel's total. Students can also download the letter and pledge form and collect signatures manually. Completed pledge forms should be sent to Diane Kolb, Executive Director, WorldManna.org, Jewish Family & Life, 90 Oak Street, PO Box 9129, Newton, MA 02464.
WorldManna.org will tabulate the signatures and pass the total number onto Hillels of Georgia, and winners will be announced March 31.
