Hillel in Israel: Making Judaism Meaningful in a Jewish State
June 27, 2005Comments (0) | Add | E-mail this to a friendAs Hillel prepares to open its newest Israel branch at the University of Haifa this fall, it has found itself answering the question of what an organization that promotes being Jewish does in an already Jewish land. The answer, says Rabbi Yossi Goldman, Associate Vice President for Israel, is easy: the very same thing.
"Our goal is always to maximize the number of Jewish students doing 'Jewish' with other Jews," said Goldman. "We are in a Jewish state but for many in our society Judaism has ceased to be meaningful."
The University of Haifa Campus will become the fourth Hillel in Israel; the other three are at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Ben-Gurion University in Beersheba, and Tel Aviv University.
