University of Missouri Faculty Encourage Accommodating Students' Religious Obligations

Steve Sternberg says most professors are considerate when he tells them he would like to miss a class or nighttime exam to observe a holiday.

But occasionally, a faculty member will tell him a date can't be changed, said Sternberg, master of Alpha Epsilon Pi, a Jewish fraternity at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

"I have had classes where teachers have said it would be highly advisable not to miss despite the fact it was on Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur," said Sternberg, a junior psychology major.
