Hillel Partners with mtvU to Stop Atrocities in Sudan
March 22, 2005Comments (0) | Add | E-mail this to a friend Hillel is partnering with the campus-focused affiliate of MTV, mtvU, to raise awareness about the genocide in Sudan and to participate in STANDFast on April 7, a day in which students will give up one everyday item -- fast - and donate the money to relief efforts in the war-torn region of Darfur. Hillels are encouraged to take the lead in sponsoring events on their campus or to join with other groups already planning mtvU events on April 7.
"Around the world, Jewish students have shown an enormous dedication to educating others about the suffering in Darfur," said Hillel President Avraham Infeld. "Joining forces with mtvU will strengthen their message and demonstrate the national scope of the student advocacy movement for the Sudanese victims of violence."
Throughout the academic year, Hillel's Weinberg Tzedek Hillel program has encouraged Jewish students around the country to become involved with the issue through groups such as Students Taking Action Now: Darfur (STAND), a coalition of concerned students committed to increasing awareness about the crisis in Darfur, raising relief for the victims and refugees and advocating for political action for a swift and sustainable solution to the crisis. From organizing candlelight vigils and lecture series at their universities to attending a national conference at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum last month, Jewish students are among the leading voices on campus against the atrocities in Sudan.
Hillel has also worked closely with many partners, including the American Jewish World Service (AJWS) and MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, to call attention to the crisis in Darfur.
Broadcasting to more than 700 campuses and more than 6 million students across the country, mtvU is the largest, most comprehensive television network just for college students. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, mtvU can be seen in the dining areas, fitness centers, student lounges and dorm rooms of campuses throughout the United States. mtvU is part of MTV Networks, a division of Viacom International Inc., which also includes MTV, MTV2, VH1, Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite, TV Land, Spike TV, CMT and others.
