March for Darfur Starts "Week of Conscience" at University of Cincinnati

The University of Cincinnati chapter of Students Taking Action Now: Darfur, which is affiliated with the Hillel Jewish Student Center of Cincinnati, kicked off the "Week of Conscience" with a Freedom Walk Sunday.

Participants met on McMicken Commons, most wearing green, and proceeded downtown to the Freedom Center via Ravine Street and Central Parkway. The march was to raise awareness for atrocities in Darfur, a region in Sudan where thousands of people have been killed and over a million people driven from their homes by what Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has called genocide.

The group has three main objectives. First, it hopes to raise awareness on campus and in Cincinnati. Second, STAND will attempt to exert political pressure on the local, state and federal governments to take action. Finally, it hopes to raise funds for Sudanese refugees.
