January 06, 2006Comments (0) | Add | E-mail this to a friend Around the world, Hillel students, professionals and leaders are responding to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's grave illness.
Hillel International Board of Governors Chairman Edgar M. Bronfman, Board of Directors Chairman Randall Kaplan and International President Avraham Infeld issued the following statement:
"Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life joins with our brothers and sisters in Israel, and with people of good faith around the world, in praying for the recovery of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. May the strength and courage that have been his mainstays throughout his life once again sustain him in this hour of need.
"May Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert have the strength, the wisdom and the support of all right-thinking people in the enormous tasks he must now complete. May he be successful in bringing the country together as he assures Ariel Sharon's legacy of solving the Palestinian-Israeli dispute."
In Montreal, Hillel students joined in a community-wide vigil for the prime minister.
"He had the personality of a rock but he could float," said Darren Bendov, an Israeli student in Montreal told The Gazette newspaper. "Not many people can be as flexible as he was. That's why he is so adored."
Other campus Hillels that have sponsored vigils include University of Michigan Hillel and the Hillel Jewish Student Center of Cincinnati.
