By Hillel International President Avraham Infeld

The news from Israel is difficult to watch, particularly for those of us Israelis who are far from home. No matter how many headlines we hear or telephone calls we make, we do not know what the next moment might hold for our loved ones, whether they are leading quiet lives at home or defending the country in the army.

As Jews we do not take joy in our enemies' losses. However, we are obligated to confront the rodef, the attacker, when lives are in jeopardy. The Hezbollah and Hamas attacks have shown that Israel can only be secure when its enemies are demilitarized and far from our borders.

During this three-week period leading up to Tisha B'Av, the day when Jews mark the destruction of both the First and Second Temples and other tragedies,  we abstain from celebrations and from other forms of diversion. This historical memory, like news reports from our past, binds us to one another as a people and to our homeland in Israel. It also reminds us of the vulnerability that comes with a lack of power, and the responsibility that comes with the use of power.

Please join me in praying for the speedy return of our hostages from Lebanon and Gaza and for lasting peace for all peoples in the region.
