Honors Abound for Campus Hillels, Professionals and Student Leaders

The 2005-06 academic term was another banner year for Hillels around the United States. Several Hillel student leaders, professionals and organizations were recognized by their universities for their outstanding contributions to their campuses and local communities. We salute the following Hillel groups and leaders that have received these honors in the past year:
- Tali Ariav, the Jewish student life coordinator at University of Iowa Hillel, was nominated for “Person of the Year” in the Iowa City Press-Citizen.
- Three Charles and Lynn Schusterman International Center professionals -- Associate Director for Student Leadership Development Brianne Nadeau, Weinberg Tzedek Hillel Fellow Emily Goodstein and Israel Education Fellow Julie Finkelstein -- were nominated for the Women’s Information Network’s annual Young Woman of Achievement Awards in Washington, D.C.
- North Carolina Hillel, together with the UNC Muslim Student Association, won the Bridge Builders Award at the Martin Luther King, Jr. University/Community Banquet. The award recognizes the organizations’ “work and leadership to eliminate barriers based on race/ethnicity, religion and social and economic conditions among the diverse communities of Orange County.”
- The Hillel Jewish Student Center of Tampa received two awards from the University of South Florida. USF’s Office of Student Activities awarded Hillel with the Outstanding Program of the Year for its Israel Week, and the Office of Multi-Cultural Activities also presented Hillel at USF with its Campus Impact Award.
- University of Florida Hillel Executive Director Keith Dvorchik was tapped as an honorary member of Florida Blue Key for his work at UF Hillel. Established in 1923, Florida Blue Key is the oldest and most prestigious leadership honorary within the state of Florida.
- Adam Frankel, the president of the Va’ad/Hillel Student Coordinating Committee at University of Arizona Hillel, was recognized for his hard work and dedication to Jewish student life on campus with the presentation of the Ron St. John Excellence in Club Presidential Leadership Award.
- Hillel at Columbia College Chicago won the Most Outstanding Student Organization Award on campus for 2005-2006. Columbia College Chicago Hillel President Rachel Winokur was also recognized with the “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges” Award for 2005-2006.
- Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach had two of its student organizations win awards from their respective universities. Hillel at Nova Southeastern University was honored for Best Overall Programming, while Hillel at Florida Atlantic University-Jupiter was recognized for Strongest Club Leadership. Several Hillel student leaders were honored as well: Jocelyn Sabbagh, the president of Hillel at FAU-Jupiter, was recognized as Owl of the Year at the Mac Awards. Eric Simon, the incoming president of Hillel at FAU-Jupiter, was given the Rising Star Award for excellent leadership and for the hope of his continued success on campus. Hillel at NSU President Randi Samuels was honored as the Outstanding Student Leader of the Year, while Hillel at NSU Vice President Diane Klein was named Servant-Leader of the Year.
- Patti Mittleman, the director at Muhlenberg College Hillel, won the Chairman's Award by the college's board of trustees. Patti was cited for her work as “a driving force behind the dynamic Jewish student population that is an intrinsic part of the make-up of Muhlenberg College.”
- Hillel at Louisiana State University was recognized by the university's Center for Student Leadership and Involvement with two awards last month. Hillel at LSU was named Most Outstanding New Student Organization and received a Program of Excellence Award for its week of events during Sukkot. Hillel at LSU Advisor Dan Novak was also nominated for Advisor of the Year, senior Rachel Spinner was nominated for the Legacy Award, and Tina Gargotta was nominated for the Unsung Hero Award.
- Hillel at Binghamton student president Jeff Teitelbaum won the Paul J. Battaglia Student Organization Leader of the Year Memorial Award at Binghamton University's Excel Center Excelsior Awards program. Teitelbaum was also named an exemplar of excellence during the university’s homecoming celebration in the fall and was a student speaker at the spring commencement ceremony.
- University of Vermont Hillel Director Susan Leff was named Advisor of the Year by the university’s Department of Student Life.
- Clark University Hillel was recently honored as Most Active Student Group at Clark’s annual Student Leadership Recognition Dinner. The award marked the seventh time in eight years that Hillel has been the recipient of one of the student organization awards.
- Hillel at Virginia Tech was named Student Organization of the Year at the 14th Annual University Student Leadership Awards Ceremony. This award recognizes the organization’s leadership, campus-wide education, follow through, professionalism and the impact of its programs. Hillel at Virginia Tech also received the Hillel Program Award for its interfaith Passover Seder from the Partnership for Jewish Life and Learning (PJLL), and student leaders Josh Scheinberg, Mara Seidel, Sean White and Danica Horrell were also honored with PJLL leadership awards.
- The Hillel/Jewish Student Union at San Diego State University received the 2006 Community Service Award for Outstanding Community Service from the Center for Community-Based Service Learning at San Diego State University.
- Hillel at California State University - Northridge received the Collaborative Program Award for its spring alternative-break trip to New Orleans with United Campus Ministries at the Matador Involvement Center's annual awards ceremony.
- Amy Olson, the director of Hillel at the University of Rhode Island, was given a certificate of appreciation from the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Programs and Services Office at URI for her contributions to the 12th Annual University of Rhode Island Symposium on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Issues last month.
- Hillel at SUNY New Paltz received the Most Outstanding Social/Religious Club award in its division of the student association on campus.
- Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life Board of Directors member Shuli Karkowsky was selected as the main commencement speaker at the University of Maryland graduation ceremony on May 21.
- Colorado State University Hillel and its Students for Holocaust Awareness group received five awards at the university’s fourth annual Student Organization Awards Recognition Ceremony. Josh Gold, CSU Hillel’s Weinberg Tzedek Hillel intern, received an Outstanding Senior Leader Award and was also named runner-up for an Outstanding Individual Community Service Volunteer Award. Dani Fishman, a CSU Hillel student ambassador, received an Outstanding Individual Community Service Volunteer Award. Jenny Edelman, the incoming CSU Hillel vice president, was named the runner-up for the Emerging Leadership for Freshmen Award. CSU Hillel was the runner-up for the Outstanding Large Organization Award, and Holocaust Awareness Week won for the award for outstanding public relations.
- Four University of Minnesota Hillel student leaders -- Michael Forstein, Dan Levin, Courtney Miller and Evan Stern -- won the President’s Student Leadership and Service Award for 2005-06. The award, presented to 40 students each year, recognizes the accomplishments and contributions made by outstanding student leaders at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. This was the largest group of University of Minnesota Hillel students ever to receive the award and the fourth year in a row that the Hillel student president won this prestigious award.
