Sustainability n. Using a resource so that it is not depleted or permanently damaged; Promoting the continuity of economic, social and institutional aspects of human society as well as the non-human environment.
2007 Charlotte B. and Jack J. Spitzer Hillel Forum on Social Justice registration is now available online. The conference will take place in Washington, D.C., from February 25-27, 2007. This year’s conference theme is “Sustainability” and much of the conference will focus on environmental/energy issues.
Students will lobby Capitol Hill on behalf of environmental/energy issues with the Jewish Council for Public Affairs. Students will also have the opportunity to network with each other and hear from top-level experts. Invited speakers include: Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-SF), Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Eli Pariser from Moveon.org. During “Open Space” brainstorming sessions, students will be able to pursue their individual passions and develop creative initiatives to bring back to their campuses.
Once again specialized tracks are being offered for students, including J-Track for students interested in journalism and a NEW special track in partnership with JCPA for juniors or seniors who have attended the Spitzer Forum in the past. This new opportunity will focus on advocacy and community organizing in the post-college Jewish community.
“With this year’s theme of ‘Sustainability,’ the Spitzer Forum will also appeal to students active in environmental groups on campus or majoring in environmental studies or related global issues as well as those already involved or interested in community service, activism, advocacy and politics, ” says Michelle Lackie, director of Weinberg Tzedek Hillel.
The deadline for earlybird registration ($365) is December 15, 2006. Scholarships will be available to students this year. For more information about the 2007 Spitzer Forum, please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org .
