To mark Jewish Social Action month, Hillel has launched the “Pledge an Hour” campaign and “PledgeanHour.org” to encourage individuals to make a commitment to volunteer service.
“Whether people pledge a week or an hour, the important thing is that they contribute to their community,” explains Hillel President Wayne L. Firestone.
Jewish Social Action Month is commemorated during the Hebrew month of Cheshvan, October 23 – November 21, 2006.
The goal for the “Pledge an Hour” campaign is 250,000 hours of service. Hillel is encouraging the broad community to match the volunteer efforts of Jewish college students who have already committed over 100,000 hours of service and volunteer work through Hillel’s tzedek, social justice, initiatives.
At the “Save Darfur Now: Voices to Stop Genocide” rally in New York City on September 17, 2006, 1,000 students took 3 hours on a Sunday afternoon to take a stand against genocide in the Sudan. Total Hours Pledged: 3,000 hours
More than 1,000 college students will take to the streets and beaches of Los Angeles for 5 hours on Sunday, November 12 as Hillel launches "JUST For A Day," a one-day social-justice blitz to make a difference in the lives of Angelinos. Total Hours Pledged: 5,000 hours
On Hillel’s Student Leadership Missions to Israel, more than 600 students will travel to Israel for 10 days, to learn about the environmental concerns facing Israel, examine issues of peoplehood and pluralism, provide emotional support to residents of northern Israel and repair damage caused by this summer’s traumatizing conflict. Total Hours Pledged: 40,000 hours
By participating in Hillel Alternative Break programs, nearly 1,300 students will spend a week-long break serving the communities of the Gulf Coast affected by Hurricane Katrina as well as other domestic and international locations. Total Hours Pledged: 52,000 hours
The launch of Hillel’s "Pledge an Hour" campaign on Monday, October 30, makes it possible for anyone to help repair their world, one hour at a time. To join the campaign and to pledge your time visit: PledgeanHour.org.
