Julian Sandler Named New Chair of Hillel

Julian Sandler, of Dix Hills, N.Y., has been elected chairman of the Board of Directors of Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life.   Current chairman, Randall Kaplan, becomes chair of Hillel’s development committee.

Mr. Sandler is the founder and CEO of Rent-a-PC, Inc., a nationwide provider of short-term computer, audio-visual and technology rentals to the IT community.  With 19 full-service locations and a strong web presence, Rent-a-PC is a recognized leader in this industry.

Mr. Sandler was also the founder and president of Brookvale Associates, which specialized in remarketing used digital hardware, and cofounder of Periphonics Corporation.  He has served on the board of several public companies, including Manchester Equipment Corporation and MTI Systems Corporation.

"I speak for the students, lay leaders and professionals of Hillel when I say we look forward to working with Julian,” said Wayne L. Firestone, president of Hillel.  “He brings a long-standing commitment to Jewish campus life to the role of chairman of the board. His knowledge and experience will help us move forward by implementing recommendations from Hillel’s five-year Strategic Plan.” 

Since 1994, Mr. Sandler has been actively involved with Hillel on both the local and the national level. In addition to serving on the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life Board of Directors, Mr. Sandler served as Hillel’s treasurer from 1998–2004, was chair of Hillel’s Strategic Planning Committee and is a member of the Management Committee for the Hillels of New York. In addition, he is a past president and an active member of the Dix Hills Jewish Center, a board member of the Fay J. Linder assisted living complex at the Gurwin Jewish Geriatric Center and a member of the Rabbinical School Board of Overseers at the Jewish Theological Seminary.

Among his local civic involvements, he is active in the Long Island Software and Technology Network (LISTnet), the Long Island Volunteer Effort (LIVE) and is a founding member of TechIsland Angels, a Long Island angel network.

Mr. Sandler graduated from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, in 1966 with a B.Sc. (Honors) in physics and received a Ph.D. in experimental nuclear physics in 1970 from Rice University.

He is married to Nina, who is active in the Long Island Jewish community and currently serves as vice chair of their synagogue. They have two sons, Ian, a vice-president in the Fixed Income division at Morgan Stanley, and Joel, a research fellow in cell biology at Rockefeller University, and one granddaughter, Riley Hanna.
