Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life has released a new professional resource for welcoming LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) Jews on campus.

Hillel LGBTQ Resource Guide.
Hillel LGBTQ Resource Guide.
Introduced on Tuesday, December 18 during Hillel's Professional Staff Conference in Washington, D.C., the Hillel LGBTQ Resource Guide is the first of its kind to be published by a Jewish student group.

The resource guide is designed to help Hillel professionals reach out to and engage the LGBTQ Jewish student population and provides tools for welcoming and working with this growing population.

"Hillel is opening the doors for all Jewish students, of all sexual orientations and gender identities," says Hillel President Wayne L. Firestone. "The resource guide provides Hillel directors with practical recommendations for welcoming this important population into our Hillels."

The guide includes personal stories by LGBTQ campus Jews, a glossary of terms, suggested language for fostering an inclusive environment as well as Jewish prayers and blessings for LGBTQ students. Designed almost exclusively by Hillel professionals, for Hillel professionals the guide also includes a listing of Queer Identified staff members, LGBTQ campus programs, and Actively Allied staff.

"There exists a common belief that religious groups are not open to the LGBTQ community," says D'ror Chankin-Gould, editor of The Hillel LGBTQ Resource Guide and Senior Jewish Campus Service Corps. (JCSC) Fellow at Columbia/Barnard Hillel. "This guide is helping Hillel break down barriers and cultivate an inclusive, welcoming home for all Jewish students."

Chankin-Gould says his own experiences as a Gay Jew, both negative and positive, inspired him to make LGBTQ Jewish outreach a priority. Currently, Chankin-Gould leads Gayava, a Jewish LGBTQ alliance, at Columbia University and Barnard College. Chankin-Gould plans to attend rabbinical school next year.

This is a wonderful step forward in welcoming all Jews into the Hillel family and helping all to understand the LGBTQ Jewish community.  Thank you.

I just read through the document in one sitting. It's truly a wonderful resource. I truly wish something this comprehensive was available when I was a Hillel program professional nearly a decade ago.

Keep up the good work.

firstly i think that a program that involves all jewish people into the amazing an dynamic community that is college. yet when it describes that such a resource guide for LGBTQ students, does that include students who are in the process of 'changing' but a much more appropriate word would be to heal from their same-sex attractions? would be nice to know?

Just wondering when Hillel will be coming out with their Guide to the Best Cheeseburgers at American Universities?

It's nice to know that a religious outreach organization makes it clear that LGBTQ students are welcome.  Not many religious organizations can say that.  That fact makes me proud to be Jewish.

This text is going to make such a difference to me personally as the work is always continuing in bringing my Judaism and queerness together. I also feel I have a resource available for activism in bringing queerness into religious venues and bringing religion into queer venues.

This text has it all - I didn't expect it to have an analysis of Leviticus! But, if it's not here, where else?! I don't know if I missed it, but don't forget the University of Toronto's queer Jewish group, Kulanu Toronto. It is really the only active     queer Jewish group the city has, serving both the student and professional communities. Mazal tov and yashar koach!

Thank you so so so much for acknowledging our existence in the Jewish community. Someone should never be shunned for their true romantic love.

I'm so happy to see that Hillel is opening it's arms this way, and really making the effort to make sure this works.

Mazal tov and thank you so much.

that cheeseburger comment is really unnecessary and shows how ignorant and unwelcoming many people still are in the 21st century. come on people! It doesn't matter people's sexual orientation - everyone is a human being and everything deserves the same respect that we all wish for.

Congratulations on publishing this extremely important document. Kol ha K'vod!

How lucky we are to have Hillel staff members like D'ror!  This guide represents a major accomplishment for the Jewish community.

The cheeseburger comment is important.  1. Your negative reaction  shows that you take yourself too seriously.  2.  You are not inclusive to people who find Kosher dietary laws restrictive in a modern world.   We need guides on the best places on campus to get Shrimp Cocktail, Lobster Bisque, and Kung Pao Pork.  We also need a forum on condom use.  When is the Hillel system going to have a gay Purim party?  We need to bring in fresh new ideas.  We haven't gone far enough here guys.
