(Be’er Sheva, Israel) -The American Union of Jewish Students (AmUJS) was officially admitted to the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS) on December 25, 2006 at the annual WUJS Congress in Be’er Sheva, Israel.

This motion marks the first time American Jewish students will represent and advocate on behalf of themselves within WUJS, an international body striving to ensure student participation in the fulfillment of the aspirations of the Jewish people, its continuity, and the development of its religious, spiritual, cultural and social heritage.

“No other group in the United States can communicate the needs of Jewish students better than students,” said Adam Daum, co-chairperson of AmUJS.  “AmUJS will provide these students with the mechanism and the manpower to control and direct activism in whatever realm they see necessary.”

AmUJS, chaired by Adam Daum and David Steinberg, will join the five other unions representing Latin America, South Africa, Australia, Israel and Europe, which currently comprise WUJS.

Jewish students, both in the United States and abroad, stand to gain from the resources offered by by AmUJS and WUJS.

For more information about AmUJS or to request an interview with David Steinberg please call 847-977-1552, email David@AmUJS.com or visit http://www.amujs.com.

The American Union of Jewish Students (AmUJS) was founded in 2004. As the only exclusively Jewish student-run organization in the United States, AmUJS aims to create a strong and independent leadership of Jewish students to speak on behalf of students concerning local, national, and global issues.

This is incorrect. WUJS had a North American presence in 1970 with the establishment of the North American Jewish Students' Network. Its first chairman was Malcolm Hoenlein, now head of the "Presidents Conference," he was succeeded by David Twersky, now Director of Foreign Affairs of AJCongress. Network spawned the Jewish Students' Press Service; North American Jewish Students' Appeal; Jewish Feminist Organization ...

Elihu,
Where did this North American presence go for the AmUJS people to be claiming that it their particular organization was founded in 2004?

Like a lot of grass roots activism of the late '60s-early '70s, North American Jewish Students' Network eventually died out before most current student activists were born.  Many of those activists moved on to other activities.

Elihu, if he looks back here, probably has a better memory than I, but I attended a number of conferences sponsored by the Network and WUJS in the early '70s.  Among other well known current leaders of the Jewish community who were active in those days, besides those mentioned by Elihu, were Sam Norich, who is head of the Forward Association or Workmen's Circle, and JJ Goldberg, now editor of the English language Jewish Forward.
