For the second time in three years, the Jewish Student Union at San Diego State University was named “Outstanding Student Organization of the Year” at the Aztec Achievement Awards. But JSU President Andrew Hoffman was not surprised.
In August 2006, Hoffman listed being recognized as “Outstanding Student Organization of the Year” as one of his goals for the year. And while he knew it would take a lot of effort from various student leaders, he also knew he had the team around him to be successful.
“The student leadership at the Jewish Student Union stepped up this year and made a commitment to model the way to build community and to promote diversity and understanding for the entire campus,” said Seth Rosenzweig, program director at Hillel of San Diego.
This year the JSU was recognized for its outstanding community service efforts. The group had adopted a family and provided gifts during the holiday season, raised money for “Save a Child’s Heart,” volunteered at senior centers and were a leading sponsor of Mitzvah Day 2007, SDSUnity: A Celebration of Community Through Service. On this project the JSU students worked closely with the Cross-Cultural Center and the Center for Community Based Service Learning to provide various volunteer opportunities for all students at San Diego State University. In addition, JSU was noted for their participation in an Alternative Spring Break trip to Montevideo, Uruguay where they built homes for impoverished families and experienced the global Jewish community.
The JSU was also recognized for its efforts in promoting diversity and understanding on campus. They participated in and were a significant supporter of the Darfur Awareness Week held on campus. By co-sponsoring activities with the LGBTSU, the Muslim Student Association and Associated Students, the JSU helped bridge gaps by sponsoring activities with UCSD and other local campuses.
The JSU also helped foster the development of other student groups such as Aztecs For Israel, the Pro-Israel student group on campus. The JSU also helped students interested in Darfur Awareness begin the process of creating a STAND chapter at SDSU.
Vice-President for Student Affairs at SDSU, Dr. James Kitchen noted, “The Jewish Student Union’s commitment to San Diego State University truly distinguishes it as an outstanding member of our campus community. It is an honor to serve at an institution where representatives like the Jewish Student Union strive for excellence everyday. The Jewish Student Union’s service and dedication is highly appreciated.”
