(June 20, 2007 - WASHINGTON, D.C.) At the U.S. Capitol building, Hillel President Wayne L. Firestone and leaders from several Jewish organizations met with approximately 20 U.S. senators from the U.S. Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee to discuss issues of critical importance to the Jewish community. Senators John Kerry, Ed Kennedy, Ben Cardin, Majority Leader Harry Reid were in attendance with Senator Debbie Stabenow chairing the discussion.  The issues discussed were Israel's security, the nuclear proliferation of Iran, Hamas and the Palestinian leadership, Hezbollah and the direction of Lebanon, climate change and energy policy, immigration and health care reform, and social justice.

Firestone presented three points of importance during the discussion: the vast numbers of students going to Israel even during this time of instability and the energy they bring with them upon their return to the U.S., student interest in campaigns relating to sustainability, energy, and the environment, and the growing number and interest of students in tikkun olam, , and and the opportunities that could present for the future.
