Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life will present its first Renaissance Award to visionary philanthropists and International Board of Governors members Charles Bronfman, Lynn Schusterman  and Michael Steinhardt at a gala event at the Museum of Natural History in New York City on May 21, 2007.

Hillel’s Renaissance Award honors those individuals whose bold vision and transformative initiatives enrich the campus, the Jewish community and the world. The Renaissance Award gala will skillfully weave art, performance and narrative to highlight initiatives that are revolutionizing Jewish life. Among their accomplishments, Bronfman, Steinhardt and Schusterman were founding partners of Taglit-birthright israel.

Hillel International Board of Governors Chairman Edgar M. Bronfman will serve as the chairman of the event. Stephen Bronfman, Stacy Schusterman and Judy Steinhardt are co-chairs.

“Our honorees exemplify the concept of Renaissance,” says Edgar M. Bronfman. “Their leadership has positively and profoundly impacted the lives of college students, the State of Israel, and the global Jewish people. Their foresight has strengthened existing infrastructures and yielded dramatic new areas of endeavor that have changed individuals and communities.”

Charles Bronfman and his late wife Andrea, z”l, established the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Philanthropies, Inc. to foster the unity of the Jewish people through such projects as Reboot, 21/64, AIDA: Association of Israel's Decorative Arts, Taglit-birthright israel, and The Jerusalem Forum.

Lynn Schusterman and her late husband Charles, z”l, established The Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, which is the principal catalyst for the rebirth of Jewish life in countries of the former Soviet Union, as well as a critical supporter of Hillel. Mrs. Schusterman is co-chair of Hillel’s International Board of Governors.

Michael Steinhardt and his wife Judy established the Jewish Life Network: Steinhardt Foundation (JLN) through which the Steinhardts have been leaders in many aspects of Jewish life, and have been instrumental in shaping some of Hillel’s most creative and significant projects. Mr. Steinhardt is co-chair of Hillel’s International Board of Governors.

I was a Steinhardt JCSC Fellow some years ago, and I have always been grateful to Michael Steinhardt for providing the funding for this great program -- it changed my life, and it let me help students connect with Judaism in ways they hadn't known were possible.  Thank you!

I was in Israel twice thanks to the generosity of the these three individuals.  Thank G-d that people like this exist within the Jewish community.  Hopefully more people will follow their philanthropic lead.
